Save Isla Vista's Parks! Vote No on Measure D Nov. 4th
Four days after Graduation Weekend an unusual meeting of the Parks Board took place followed by a "special" meeting five days later. The Board agreed to put a measure on the ballot (Measure D) with a 3 to 1 vote. The County Supervisors rubber stamped it, and the I.V. community was completely left out of the process.
Democracy took a detour!
Development: D is designed to fool the Coastal Commission into allowing developers to turn the Downtown I.V. loop into a "high rise" residential area, by promising to build massive underground parking structures. Delusional!
Destruction: The County recently bought the St. Athenasius Church and I.V. Clinic properties with our tax dollars and now, with Measure D, it wants to swap them back to us. In exchange, developers can have their way with our downtown parks. Despicable!
Demoralization:The primary purpose of Measure D is to divide and conquer the community of I.V. But don't despair. We can unite to defeat Measure D. And while we're at it we can take back the Parks Board by defeating Kennedy, Crusinberry, and Murdock on NOV. 4.
Two UCSB Students Running for IV Parks Board
Liz Buda and Joshua Cataldo are running for IV Parks and Rec Board this November 4th. Vote Student for Parks Board when you vote for president. Liz is the former A.S. Off-Campus rep to Isla Vista, and has been involved in all dimensions of IV culture, including co-organizing the Chilla Vista festival. Josh is on the board of the Santa Barbara Student Housing Coops in IV and makes homemade yogurt in his spare time.
Currently there is no student representatives on the IV Parks board; this is a serious issue considering the demographics of Isla Vista. In light of the IV Master Plan and Measure D it is increasingly possible that IV might lose its parks to redevelopment and commercialization. We must maintain the integrity of IV's parks as places for public gatherings, and as custodians of a storied history of counterculture and student activism.
